Name your own Blocks That Matter
If you’ve seen the gameplay footage we uploaded last week, you may have noticed a chest at the end of the level :
At first sight, it seems impossible to reach this chest but if you use the blocks available in the level wisely, you’ll find a solution.
Well I can tell you what’s inside this chest: a “Super Meat Boy” block.
The “Super Meat Boy” block is part of the “Blocks That Matter” collection.
In each level, you’ll find a chest : collect it, jump into the exit portal and you’ll earn one of these special blocks. They will allow you to unlock bonus levels and discover new games to play.
Most of the “Blocks That Matter” games will be games that use blocks in some way: indie games, mainstream games and board games too.
This progression system that promotes other games is really important to us. It’s another way to create links between games and we hope it will help players discover new games to play, famous and not-so-famous ones.
But we need your help !
We already have a list of games we want to include in the “Blocks That Matter” collection, but you probably have titles in mind we didn’t thought about. So if you are a player or a game developer and you want to suggest us games, use the comments section of this article or send us a mail.
It can be games based on blocks (like Minecraft) but it can aslo be games that use important blocks at a particular moment (like Portal and its companion cube). And it can be commercial games, free games, pc games, consoles games, board games…
Long live games! Long live blocks!
Good bunch of stuff Clauclaudr 🙂 Thanks for these ideas!
And I don’t forget that we need to meet and talk :] But for now it’s quite hot in there!
Devil Dice
Kula World
Kurushi
Ilomilo
Rush
The box of Mario Kart’s power ups
CCCP’s Sublimation
Gromy’s One Eye Shooter (differents things are made with blocks :D)
@Lorancou
Jeeeeennnnga! Could be a good idea :]
And Sim City… raah, it remembered me that I was playing the Super Nes version… and all big building looked like blocks too :]
@Alain:
3D Dot Game Heroes… how did we miss this one! Thanks 😉
Thanks TheDekuLink !
Minesweeper is definitely a good title to include 🙂
This is the complete list I could think about:
*Crash Bandicot crate’s block
*Bomberman brick’s block
*Lode runner brick’s block
*Tetris square block
*Mario Bros’s POW block
*Minesweeper’s mine block
And obliviously… companion cube block, ? block, minecraft blocks…
I almost forgot the only 3D-cube-based-game that I do find visually outstanding : 3d dot game heroes
Some ideas :
– Jenga
– Breakout (if you want to play it “roots”)
– Crash Bandicoot (well, yeah, in my memory it has lots of blocks)
– Sim City (city block 😉 )
And if block = cube…
– Cube / Cube 2 Sauerbraten (FPS, open source, check it out)
– The Gamecube? (ok, not a game title strictly speaking)
Thank you all for your suggestions !
There’s a lot of games we didn’t thought about. From the dice to Windosill, I think we will have a great list of “Blocks That Matter”. Don’t hesitate to add more games to the list.
I suggest few games i played when i was young
– catacomb ( maybe the mirror at each level end )
– arkanoid ( i think it could be difficult to use it in BTM )
– Double Dragon ( lot of wooden crate which you can throw)
– Block out
– Hybrid ( 😀 freshly renamed Happy Burst Day ( I dare, but i know that it will be released a few time later… well hope so ) )
Mario. But I’m sure you already have it!
Maybe Lode Runner ?
Adventure of lolo, zelda?
Awesome idea !
The blocks that pop into my mind :
– The dice (maybe the first gaming block that mattered!)
– The crates in sokoban
– The card board boxes in MGS
– Blocks from the indie iPhone game “The Blocks Cometh” (itself a tie-in to the nice platformer “Evil Genius”)
– And maybe a bit too conceptual, but well… the pixel, of course. The tiny block that started it all!
Oh, and of course that Stieven Spielberg game for the Wii: Boom Blox!

@Fabien : oh yes, all these isometric games too. I must add my favorites : Batman and Head over Heels.
Ok, I’m changing my comment name right now for “Guillaume (another one)”, because two Guillaume (plus on William, the english name of Guillaume! 🙂 can confuse you readers… You’re welcome for the memory lane on Solomon’s Key. I was playing this one on Amstrad CPC. It was a crappy port, but I remember playing it on arcade once and it’s was awesome!
Mighty Bomb Jack, Knight Lore, Alien 8
@Guillaume:
Holly crap, I just remembered that my cousin possessed the GameBoy version (Solomon’s Club), I clearly remember the cover of the game!
Thanks for bringing my memory back!
@Alain:
Thanks, this time I’m pretty sure I never played Pengo, and it looks great 🙂
N has block-shaped coins, thwomps and bouncy platforms:

Bomberman, Sokoban, Pengo, Gauntlet…
Whoooa, Solomon’s Key look awesome! I wasn’t aware of this game!
In each level of Windosill you need to find a white block that acts as the key to open the door to the next level.

Blocks remind me :
– Legos (of course)
– Solomon’s Key
– the Rubik’s cube
– Tetris and Boulder Dash, but I know these are already on your radar!
