Blocks That Matter out on Steam!
Posted on August 20, 2011
Finally, the game is available on Steam for Windows and Mac users.
Launch trailer, tell us everything you know about Blocks That Matter!
You can buy the game by following this link.
We know some players have difficulties to run the game, but we are working to fix this issue as quickly as we can. If you have some problems, go ckeck out the game’s Steam group to find possible temporary solutions.
The game will be available for Linux players next week, somewhere on the internet. We’ll keep you informed. (EDIT : The game is now available on Linux!).
And Xbox360 users that maybe have already finished the game can launch it again cause the XBLIG update is now out too, with new levels and objectives.
Have a nice week-end with Tetrobot!
Hi Timotei,
You’re right, the only demo we have so far is the TechDemo, consisting on 5 levels of the final game.
You can find this demo here:
http://www.indiedb.com/games/blocks-that-matter/downloads/btm-playable-tech-demo
We (well, William!) are working on a real demo version with specific levels, so maybe you will see that coming on Steam some days.
For now, the only way is the TechDemo!
Thanks!
Hi!
On the xbox live there is a demo. But on Steam is not, even if on your website there is a steam “Try” text. Any clue on that? I’d like to try the game before buying it 🙂
Thanks!
PS: It looks cool so far.
Hello Greg,
– Was your Steam Client up and running when you tried to double click the app?
– Did you try to check the cache integrity of the game? (right click on the game in Steam, then choose “Properties”, then “Local Files” tab in the window that pops up, then “Check cache integrity” or something like that.
I know that you don’t want to play the game anymore, to get refund, all of that, but it can be help us fixing issues.
Just remember that we are not Valve, we don’t make games since 15years, and we don’t own the platform on which the game is running on.
– Can you contact us via email please, (contact at swingswingsubmarine dot com) so we can see what we can do for you.
Thanks
@Greg : Please, contact us by mail now. It’ll be easier to manage this problem outside the comments. http://www.swingswingsubmarine.com/contact/
Also just now after trying app directly uninstalled and reinstalled steam. I’m sick of waiting, how do I go about getting a refund from you guys. I don’t wanna try coding or hacking or searching, I want a game that works right out of the gate, which is why I prefer console gaming. Nothing against you guys, I’m sure it’s greta, but understand where I am coming from-
I managed to find the steam folder and get an error API when launching game from blocks.app in the steam/common folder. So the issue now isn’t steam its your game, I think
Yes, because I play all versions of Half life 2 which utilize all of that and everything runs just fine. So thats not the issue
I gotta say, keeping us Xbox-users updated is really awesome of you guys. I did not expect to see an update for the game, since most other developers just upload their game to the marketplace and call it done. but you actually went the extra mile, and are therefore earned even more of my respect. Keep it up, guys! seriously, you’re spoiling us!
@Slade:
No gif for now, but we’ll think about it!
@DarkStrive:
Do you still have issue?
Feel free to send me an email at guillaume at swingswingsubmarine dot com.
Just bought my steam release, downloaded, installed, launched no problem 🙂
(Win7 64b)
And now listening to the full soundtrack on http://morusque.bandcamp.com/album/blocks-that-matter
Long life to BTM 😀
Hi Greg:
A Mac Lion user that had the same trouble to launch the game by double cliking the app file (that should work on Lion) figured out the following things:
– The Steam client was already installed when he made the updgrade from SL to Lion
– When Steam launchs,he got some log like this:
25/08/11 08:12:16,024 [0x0-0xb30b3].com.valvesoftware.steam: Failed to create Service pipe
25/08/11 08:12:16,025 [0x0-0xb30b3].com.valvesoftware.steam: Failed to connect to Steam Service
25/08/11 08:12:16,045 [0x0-0xb30b3].com.valvesoftware.steam: Failed to load Steam Service
25/08/11 08:12:16,045 [0x0-0xb30b3].com.valvesoftware.steam: ServiceStart: failed to start
… Blablablah …
This log indicated that Steam had some trouble to read his own files! I guess that was a Lion tricks who seem to be very protective (like hiding fucking /library folder in the Finder)
– So I asked him if other games launched from his Steam clients… he said to me that some yes, some others no. When I get the list of games that was working, it was chrystal clear:
All the game using the Steam API (for cloud, achievements) were not launching.
– I advised him to reinstall the Steam.app… and it seams that solved his problem (well, of course for now he had to use the “double click the .app in the finder” trick, but he can play, with Cloud, with Achievements).
I don’t know which are the games you own on your OSX client, neither if you made a from scratch install of Lion or if you updated a SL with Steam installed.
But if you’re in the same case as this person (hello Cinqvert if you read this!), then you should definitely try:
– to see if you got some games using the Steam API (to see this, you can click the “Store Page” link from the Steam Client, when you have a game selected, it’s on the right of the Client window in a sections called “Links”.
When you are on a game page (like ours http://store.steampowered.com/app/111800/), you can see a description section
(always on the right of the page).
BTM page indicate:
-> 1 player
-> Steam Achievements (<<< Steam Cloud (<<<< this also means we use the Steam api)
– If you have some game like this (using Steam Cloud or Achievements), then try to launch them. Do they run?
– If not, then it means you have to re-install your Steam Client is not able to run correctly (thanks Lion for that!).
Putting the Steam.app to the trash and getting a new one from http://store.steampowered.com/ could help.
Once again, let me deeply apology, I'm truly aware of that annoying issue, but all the Lion user manage to run the game from the Finder (and you can create an Alias of the app by right clicking it and put it where you want… like on your desktop!)
Lion is a pain, really. I don't know yet exactly what happen between Steam, the Game, the OS, but be sure it's hunting me!
Regards
Guillaume
PS: an easy solution to by pass the issue that player was encountering (Steam unable to connet to his own services) will be to deactivate the use of the Steam API within the game.
I can do that, I’m not sure Steam will let us do that (but after all, some games ship on Steam with no Steam API support). This could be an option in the config file.
But this also means that the player will not unlock any achievements, neither the would have their game saves clouded via Steam. And this sucks, but less that being unable to launch the game.
yes i tried everything. any eta on patch for mac lion?
Thank you all for your support 🙂
@Greg : If you really want to refund, I think you can contact Steam. But I’d prefer to offer you another copy of the game. We are working hard to provide a patch for Mac Lion users. Have you already tried the temporay solution to launch the game: http://steamcommunity.com/games/blocksthatmatter/announcements/detail/1387327810249335849 ? Please try and send us a mail to tell us if it works or not.
Anyword on the Mac front??
If it’s not fixed by the end of the week can I get a refund?
Nothing against you guys but I wanted to play the game with my free time this week, and I have not been able to
Salut !
Help me when i downloaded BTM through steam it shows a screen that says Step 1 of 1 performing first time setup so can someone help me?!?!?!?
@Jasp @GunJack : Thank you 🙂
@Lucca : Well it’s not our priority, but if you think someone can help make this happen, feel free to send us the contact 🙂
@Nicolas : It’s our duty to test the game, not Steam. We will soon release the game on other platform, don’t worry 🙂 When you buy Blocks That Matter, you can play it on Windows, Mac and Linux cause it’s a JAVA port. So you don’t need to pay three times. Thank you for your support!
Hi.
How is it possible that there are such problems ? Haven’t Steam staff tested the game at least once ??
It is very sad for you guys, I hope it will not affect sales too much and that you’ll find a solution quickly.
By the way : why don’t you sale the game yourself instead of using Steam ? And if I buy the Linux version, will I get the Windows version too ?
Just asking, I think I am going to wait for the Linux version anyway.
Courage, matelots !
Aller dans Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\blocks that matter
Hey Guys !
I’m going to take the Steam version.
Have you thought to make an Android Version (since PC version is Java, it could be done in less than a week)
Think about it 🙂
Congratulations anyway : You made it !!!
Ok, now get back to “Seasons After Fall”
Just bought it, game runs fine from Steam! (XP 32bit)
Very good game, nice work guys 🙂
@Alexandre:
Thanks for your support compatriot 🙂
And for Lion, for now I’ve no idea what is messing around.
For the Win 7 64, it’s a problem when the game try to link with the Steam Dll at runtime.
Since the Java Machine is running in 64bits mode, it’s not capable of linking the Steam dll which is a 32bits one.
The game can runs on given Win 7 64 before the patch thanks the the miracle use of the Java Machine installed in the Program File (x86) folder.
The patch consists in embedding a Java Machine (a x86 one), but it seams that almost 1 person still have trouble with this 🙁
I’m loosing faith, but thanks for your support and patience with us!
Hi Guillaume, have any idea on the problem ?
It’s pretty weird I didn’t have any problem to launch and play it from steam.
By the way, congratulations to you guys, it’s awesome to see that game growing, and has we say here : bon courage, et bonne continuation, vous le méritez !
Hi Curt,
We asked for a steam forum, but we have to wait the steam crew to activate it.
Did you have tried the manipulation described in the steam group?
http://steamcommunity.com/games/blocksthatmatter
Thanks all of you for your patience 🙁
I’m such a d*ck.
I bought your game on steam and it doesn’t work at all 🙁 And you guys have NO steam forums which is bizarre. Please fix this soon!!
What version of os are you using @ciro for mac??
Tried the game on Mac, it works for me (MacBook pro 15″ i5 processor, bought in july 2010).
Guys, more than 40 levels?! You want to kill me! 😀
I’m enjoying the game a lot, I love collecting the friggin’ blocks that matter!!
Bon bah vivement la version linux
Just bought the game! (don’t know if it’s gonna launch yet).
If it doesn’t work when launching from Steam, it means Steam is giving the game some default launch options that the game doesn’t receive when launched on his own.
Also BIT.TRIP Runner has a similar problem, and people (including me) resolved it by changing the launch options in the text file of the game’s directory.
Bonne continuation!
yves
A maybe stupid question but, where is the demo gone?
@all : We are still working on a patch. You can try to locate the BTM.jar and use it. If it doesn’t work on Mac, I don’t know what to do right now. If it doesn’t work on Windows, you can try to use the .bat file method explained in the Steam group comments.
@Lion : A yellow star is earned by collecting the max number of available blocks in the level and going to the exit. A green star is earned by being smarter than us (the developers) and being able to collect more blocks than we thought. It can happen, but not in every level. The only way to know how much block you need is to try and/or look at the star you can see at the left of the screen in levels you’ve already played.
Rahhhhh !
Todo : ask confirmation before leaving a level (or deactivate the mouse (right click makes you leave the level when on pause grrr)) !
Question : how work the stars, how do we know how many blocks do we have to keep at the end of a level to get a star and what’s the difference between a yellow and a green star ?
Thanks and good night.
Game will not run in windows 7 64 bit. Have done everything in the readme file, and tried every bat file. Bought it on Steam. I wanna play!
Great news guys! 🙂
Game will not run on Macpro with 8GB Ram 2011, i5
Attempts to open and then closes.
Do not buy until issue has been resolved, as of now I have wasted $5.
I really want to like this game too
dommage
cordialement
